Pension of Anthony Bowsher

The State of Ohio }
Pickaway County } ss

        On this 10th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court before David Hinnear, Thomas Renick and Samuel Lybrand(?) associate Judges of the court of common pleas of Pickaway County Aforesaid, now holding a special session of said court, Anthony Bowsher a resident of Washington township in the said County of Pickaway & State of Ohio aged Seventy-Seven years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832-viz:
        That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein state to wit: that he was drafted during the revolutionary war as a member of the Pennsylvania Militia three separate times and served two months at each draft making six entire months service— that he was first drafted in the summer season of the year he thinks 1775 for a two month tour of duty - that he served at the tour two months under the following named officers: Colonel Lentamoot, Major Garder, Captain Peter Spangler, Lieutenant John Reichelderfer, the Ensigns name not recollect— that he does not recollect the month he entered into the service nor the month he left it. In this tour he was marched to Philadelphia first, then to Newtown, then to Newark in New Jersey & from thence to a place 18 miles distant, where he was engaged in taking a considerable quantity of wheat, with in the British lines, that they had stored in a meeting house. In the second tour, he was drafted for tow months, in the fall season, after the British had taken Philadelphia, he entered and left the service at this time, he does not recollect. The militia drafted from Berks county, where he resided rendezvoused at Reading, in said county and he was from thence marched into the neighborhood of Philadelphia to cut off supplies to and from the British there & endeavor to compel them to leave the city. He served two months at this tour and lay to whole time with the American troops near Philadelphia; except an excursion he made to Little York with a select party of fifty men to guard some weapons there & to Lancaster, for provisions in which excursion he was engaged three weeks or thereabouts. He had the same officers in this tour as in the first-named herein. gen. Washington was in command of the American forced, laying then around Philadelphia & there was a considerable body of regular troops lying there at the time, but the regiments and names of the officers he does not now recollect. In the third tour of duty performed by him, he was drafted in the later part of the summer of 1781, to guard the frontier against the Indians. He served two months at this time under the same regimental officer as before; but the Captain's name having command of the company at this time, was Whetstone & the names of the other company officers are not now recollected. He was marched to the frontiers of the State of Pennsylvania on the west side of the Schuylkill river; and by there the whole two months, guarding the frontier inhabitants, against the Indians, —there were no regular troops with this body of the militia at this time. At the time of all this service he was a resident of Berks County in the State of Pennsylvania. He further states that he has no documentary evidence of any part of this service & knows of no one by whom he can prove his said service. He further states, that he was born in the said County of Berks, in the year 1755—that he has a records of his birth, in a bible kept by him, which was copied from a records kept by his Father — that he removed from Berks County to Northumberland County in Pennsylvania, soon after the war closed and live in that county 20 or 21 years & then removed to where he now lives — that he knows John F. Clark and Jacob Fry, present neighbors of his, who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his services as a soldier of the revolution. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever, to a pension or annuity, except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension rolls, of the agency of any State.

Will of Anthony Bowsher

In the Name of God Amen I Anthony Bowsher Senr of the County of Pickaway and State of Ohio being weak in body but of sound mind and memory Thanks to God therefore and Well Knowing that it is appointed for all men to die do make ordain and Publish this my Last Will and Testament of all my Real and Personal Property the I may Die Seized with or Belonging to me in any manner what so ever.

First) I will and ordain that my body may be Buried in a Decent & Christian Like manner and That my Executor so soon after my Decease as Possible Do pay all my Just Debts out of my Estate as soon as Possible after my Decease and as toching (sic) the residue of my Estate I will and bequeath in the following manner

Secondly) I will and bequeath unto my son Anthony Bowsher Junr One Hundred and Fifty two acres of Land Lying and being in the County of Pickaway and in the State of Ohio it being the same tract of Land that I now Live on as will more fully appear by a Deed of Conveyance made by me on the fourth day of June in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Eight.

Thirdly, I will and bequeath unto my Daughter Catharine Justice Formerly Catharine Bowsher now the wife of Jesse Justice the sum of of (sic) Fifty Dollars to be paid out of my Estate by my Executor out of my Personal Property but if there should not be sufficient to pay this Bequest then my Executor do pay the same out of his own Estate by my having this day willed and bequeathed to him one Hundred and Fifty Two acres as well as having executed to Him a Deed of Conveyance to Him bearing Evendate (sic) with this will

Forthly, (sic) I will and bequeath unto my Daughter Barbary Buck formerly Barbary Bowsher now the wife of John Buck the sum of Fifty Dollars to be paid in the same manner as the bequest to Catharine Justice (the Bequest to be paid within Two years after my Decease by my Executor without delay)

Fifthly) I will and bequeath unto my son Daniel Bowsher Ten Dollars to be paid by my Executor out of my Estate within one year after my Decease this Bequest is made to him in lieu of a guun (sic) given to all the Rest of my sons

Sixthly - I will and ordain that the residue of my Estate that I may Die seized with of Debts money and Every thing that I may hold by Just Right to me Be Equally Divided among my Sons and Daughters (Namely) Peter Bowsher Henry Bowsher John Bowsher Jacob Bowsher Daniel Bowsher William Bowsher and my Daughters Elizabeth Harpster Formerly Elizabeth Bowsher and Catharine Justice Formerly Catharine Bowsher and Barbary Buck formerly Barbary Bowsher or their Heirs or offspring to be paid to them so soon as my Executor shall be able to make a Final Settlement with & make sale of all and Every of my Estate at Publick Vandue (sic) with the exception of the Before mentioned Bequests and I Expressly Enjoin that my Executor do pay over to my Sons and Daughters the before mentioned bequests Immediately to them my heirs or their offspring

Lastly, I nominate Constitute and appoint my Son Anthony Bowsher Junior the sole Executor of this my last will and Testament hereby Revoking all and any Former wills or Testaments by me made or Intended to be made by me in Toto of Every Kind whatsoever ----In testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this fourth day of June in year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Eight

The Story:

In the 1700's Daniel Bauscher and his wife Eva Maria Drach, from the Palintine area of what is today, Germany, had eleven children. Literacy was a problem at the time, so the spelling of the last name of the Bauscher's children was Bauscher for Philip, Susanna, John Peter, Tobias, Anna Elizabeth, and Christina who were born in Berks County Pennsylvania. William, Jacob, and Anthony's last name, who were all born in Ohio, was recorded as Bowsher. Henry's last name, from Berks County, Pennsylvania was recorded as Boucher.

My family branches off from Philip Bauscher. All of his seven children's last name are spelled as Braucher. His son Christian second wife was Maria Barbara (Polly) Dietrich. The Dietrich line is my Maternal Grandmother's direct line.

Maria Barbara (Polly) Dietrich is one of the children of Johann Michael Dietrich and Sophis Bruenner. They had a bunch of children, one of which is Michael Dietrich, who married Hannah Will. One of their children was Benneville Dietrich who married his first cousin, daughter of Christian and Maria Barbara (Polly) Dietrich Bauscher. It was common in the mid 1800's for first cousins to marry.

The Bauscher line then leaves my direct line. However, the family re-connects again through the Bailey line, also of Berks County Pennsylvania. My Grandfather's (George Benjamin Bailey) first wife (Jennie Kistler) died 12 days after the birth of her second son (Mark Daniel Bailey). Mark needed a wet nurse, so he was given to Carrie I Bailey Baucher (George Benjamin Bailey's sister) to nurse. Carrie was married to William George Baucher. Carrie had given birth to a daughter Alice Louisa Bauscher, three weeks before Mark was born and therefore was able to nurse both children.

After George Benjamin Bailey remarried to my grandmother, Edna Matilda Dietrich, two years later, they decided that Mark had become "the son" of Carrie and William Baucher and Mark was raised by the Baucher's until adulthood. About 10 years after the birth of Mark, the farm that George Benjamin and Edna Matilda owned, burned to the ground and they moved to Reading to manage a restaurant owned by George Benjamin's Uncle. My father, Glenn Vinton Bailey (son of George Benjamin and Edna Matilda), told many stories about the weekend trips to the farm to visit Mark.

My family history continues to reside in Berks County Pennsylvania until Glenn Vinton Bailey (my father) moved his family to the west in the 1960's, Montana, Utah and finally to California, where we call home.
