Family Notes Grayless Family Notes Including Carmean and others From Ireland to the Eastern Shore of Maryland Dorchester & Caroline Co MD Ross, Fayette & Allen Counties Ohio Miscellaneous Notes and Correspondence Check related families at Family Notes Researchers should check John Carmean Descendants Site. Since I started sharing this information with others over the past 40 years. Quite a few websites with newer research on the descendants has connected my Data from the 1700's where I was working down with the current work of others who were working back. One of the better connections to those working on completeing the Carmean/Cremean lines is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohross/Genealogy%20Reports/genealogy_charts_c.htm. If you find other websites on Carman/Creaman that I should list here Please send them to me at DrG@execpc.com I am still gathering information on Descendants through the Grayless lines of Mary Grayless Carmean and her sister Fillie (Philadelphia) Grayless Carmean. Thank you so much for providing your Gradeless Family Index online. I was quite excited to find my ancestors Nancy Grayless (871) and John Carmean (1116) included in the list. I would be very grateful for any information you might have on this pair. I am also interested in finding their parents. Would either of the books the "Ancestors. Relatives and Descendants of Nathaniel Gradeless" or "The Grayless/Gradeless Family Register 1743-1993" contain this information? Thank you for your help. Kate McCarter From: FMSH02A@prodigy.com (MS KATE MCCARTER) Date: Tue. 28 Oct 1997 23:28:58. -0500 Dear Dr. Gradeless. Thanks for your response to my question about Nancy Grayless and John Carmean and for giving the origins of the Grayless name. This is the first of 8 names in my Grandmother's line that is actually Irish. I find this rather intriguing considering my grandmother always claimed to be Scotch/Irish. I guess she just didn't know about all the German. Dutch. English and French in the family tree! I have printed a descendant chart for Nancy Grayless and John Carmean and will send it along with my check for the book. I only discovered my Grayless. Carmean and DeHaven lines over the summer and most of what I've learned about them came from some very helpful folks at the DeHaven Club. (John and Nancy Carmean's son Jesse was married to a Mary DeHaven. You may already have this information. but in case you don't. the Club's address is DeHaven Club 913 Chasewood Denton. Texas 76205-8203 I did have one more question for you. Does the 1743-1993 book contain just basic stats (birth. death. marriage dates) or does it also have some of the family stories? I am really most interested in learning stories about Nancy and her ancestors and was wondering if I would find more of what I'm looking for in the other book? Thanks for all your help. Dear Dr. Gradeless.
Thanks -so- much for taking me back three more generations on my Carmean
line. I've included a bit more info that wasn't contained in my
descendant chart on Nancy Grayless. I hope you find it useful.
That story about John Carmean being an orphan from Holland came from a
book on the History of Ross County. Ohio. I never gave it too much
weight and am glad to have the correct info.
Please -do- add me to your list of researchers. One would think there
must be more of Nancy's descendants around and about.
I'm really looking forward to reading your book.
Thanks Again.

Dear Mr. Gradeless
My Aunt and I are searching for information on Mary A. Cremean.
She was born abt 1820 (possibly 15 Dec 1820) in Ohio. She married
George Noll b. 17 Apr 1819 in PA. on 1 Dec 1839 in Allen Co. Ohio. Mary
died 15 Dec 1891 in Orient. Adams Co. IA and George died 17 Aug 1899 in
Orient. Adams Co. IA.
We have thought that Mary A. Cremean was the daughter of Smith (your RN#
1090) Cremean and Mary "Polly" Dillon (#1093). We thought this was a
possiblity because Smith Cremean had land adjoining Michael Noll. the
father of George Noll in Allen Co. Ohio. If Curtis D. (#4513) is a son
of Smith Cremean then our Mary would not fit in as their births would be
only six months apart. Perhaps Mary A. Cremean is a niece of Smith
Cremean or we may have her birthdate incorrect. Any help you can give us
in placing Mary A. Cremean in the correct family and extending our lines
would be greatly appreciated. We are happy to share all our information
with you. We are interested in grouping all the Cremean/Carmean families
correctly and could use your help greatly.
Thank you for your time and assistance.

I was informed that all the Cremeans/Cremeens/Carmeans lines in MD and especially Caroline Co. previously Dorchester Co. were from John Crimine of County Cork. and was surprised to get the email from Gayle that claimed the Holland connection. I have checked with other of our researchers and have been assured that the Curtis Cremeen she claims was born in Holland was in fact one of our Irish lines. I don't know where the girl got her mis-information. but indeed the Cremeans/Cremeens/Carmeans in MD were from Ireland. If you read my descendent chart you would see that John Crimine came over on the Crown Maligo. I thank you very much for your help and appreciate your files. Thanks again and have a great day. Dear Donald.
We have very little information on our Cremean line. What we do know
is that Mary A. Cremean married George Noll on 1 Dec 1839 in Allen Co.
Ohio. This information comes from Broderbund disc #400 Ohio Mg. index
1789-1850 all counties. Broderbund disc #2 IL. IN. KY. OH. & TN
marriage index 1720-1926 has the marriage listed as Mary CORMEON and
George Hall 00 Dec 1839. Allen Co. Ohio. We know for sure that George's
last name is really NOLL not Hall because their daughter Julia Noll is
my gg grandmother. My aunt and I both feel that Mary A. Cremean
(Carmean. Carmine) is the daughter of one of Smith Cremean's (Your
#1090) brothers. Perhaps you have information on these siblings of
Smith. We would be thrilled to know who all of the brothers and sisters
are and their birthdates. We believe his brothers are Jacob. William.
James. Jesse. and possibly Zeb. Are we correct in this supposition?
The children of George Noll and Mary A. Cremean are as follows
Jane b. 1841 Ohio
John b. 1842 Ohio
Charles b. 1843 Ohio (Died in Civil War)
Jesse b. 1844 Auglaize. Ohio
Catharine (Kate) b. 1845 Ohio
Adeline b. 1847 Ohio
Mary b. 1848 Ohio
Suzy b. 1851 Ohio
Lucretia Alice Louise b. Aug 1852 Ohio
Julia A. Noll b. 25 Sep 1855 Kossuth.
Auglaize. Ohio .
(My gg grandmother)
The family then moved to Iowa and one more child was born
Josephine b. Oct 1857/1858
As you can see we are just starting to get leads on this line. I hope
that you will be able to help us place her with the correct family.
Thanks for your time and effort on behalf of our search.

Dr Gradeless.
I do not recognize the name Custirs. I can get back to Preston Cremeans
and no further at this stage. The best guesstimate I can make is that he
is the grandson of Higgins Cremeans. Higgins then traces back to the
Maryland mainline Cremeans family. It seems there are a bunch of West
Virginia Cremeans and then another group of Ohio/Indiana Cremeans.
There is some suggestion that Preston's mother was a Sarah Cremeans and
she never married Preston's father. This may or may not be true. But I
am almost certain that my Cremeans line goes back to the Maryland clan
and ultimately back to Ireland. I just can't make that link from Preston
to Higgins yet. .
Thanks.
Jackie

Ohio 45502 Jill May 531 Harrison Avenue Harrison. OH 45030-1307 513 - 367-0505 When I met Mary Ballard at the Museum in Lima it was a real comedy scene. It was nearing closing time and I asked the librarian for the Cramean file. She asked if I was related and told her that the Allen Co. Cremeans were descended from the Grayless Family. She told me that one of her friends (Mary Ballard) had been looking for a Grayless for over 30 years. I told her they were real and that I was here. She gave he a telephone call and as fast as her car traveled she was at the museum just as it was closing. We went to the parking lot and because it had just started sprinkling. I opened the hatch back on my Ford Escort and unhocked the package shelf so it was make a tray. I set up the portable printer and the portable computer and started printing family group sheets for her. Just about half way through the sprinkle turned into a downpour!!! I mean a real downpour! Mary and her umbrella. I had a Golf Umbrella. The rain was coming down so hard it was bouncing up to the height of the car bumper. The Wind was blowing so hard that it was tipping the printer over which was protected by the rear hatchback but the wind began blowing sideways and getting under on the computer. Finally we got the last sheet out of the printer. Everything was soaked. We looked like we hadn't even been under the umbrellas it rained so hard. I shut everything off so it would not short out from getting soaked. Only two dedicated genealogists would have been so stupid to stay out in the rain and lightening to print family group sheets! If I can locate all the pages I copied last summer I hope to work on them this summer.
Letters from Clara Mitchell. Preston. MD.
July 3. 1980 Dear Don.
I am sorry to have been so long in writing
you. Its seems you forgot to send me the paper showing what you already
have learned.
When I wrote you recently. I was under the impression that you were
under the Berry line. What I was referring to was that the first Wm. Berry that
we know of was in that group of puritans that can to A. A. Co. in 1650. As you
probably know they overthrew the Lord Baltimore and set up their own government
for a short time. Richard Preston was one of the group of Commissioners who
rules the colony. He lived at Patuxent. He was also Secretary of State since the
records were kept at his home. The first Wm. Berry married his daughter. Dorchester
County was set up in 1669. Before that Berry was in Dorchester County. He owned
land there. lower part. but not recorded in thier land records since they had not been
started. They may be in Talbot since that part of Dorchester was then a part of Talbot Co.
The first time I have found his anme was in Jones' History of Dor. in a roster of men
who fought the Indiands in 1678. Berry later moved to Talbot co. One of his sons
moved to Kent Co. Del. I am wondering if your Wm. could have been his son
since the Todd land is so close to the Del. line.
I have been working on the Willis line for many years. Mrs. Edward Sparrow of
White Plans. N. Y. is now the official Willis historian. She has been to see me many
times. She may come this summer. Here late father. Charles Willis spent a good part of
his life looking up his line. He found this in Quaker records
Thos. Willis was in Talbot Co. in the 1600's. I may have dates.
His sons. John & Richard fought in the Indiana insurrection from Talbot Co.
They were under Capt. Dawson. Richard bought a Farm "Roadly" in Dorchester Co. on
the Transquakin River at now DeCausey's Bridge from Thos. Taylor. We have their
records. Brother John bought 50 a of "Wantage" one the Blackwater River about five
miles from Cambridge about where the Bird Refuge now is. This John had many
children. His eldest son John in 1719 came to Preston area & bought land. He had
several sons. Richard another son. In fact 2 sons names john - several other. I can get
them for you. One was names Joshua. We have no records of a Joshua buying land or
anything else until Joshua began buying land after the revolution. Land records in
Denton. He seemed to be the only Willis who was wealthy. I am wondering who his
wife was. We have only her first name but Hunting Creek was full of Rich men so that
could be the answer. One of his tracts was on "Paynter's Range" where I took you to
the old brick house. His son Joshua Jr. owned it and lived there. He sold it to his
brother Peter. We believe he (Peter) built the brick end. He was wealthy and his son
married into a very rich family--Rowens. There is so much known about this Willis
family.
I was given this notation. Willis' Landing 1805. Petition of Joshua Willis of
Dor. Co. Petitioner's deceased father (Joshua Sr. had surveyed tract (another tract
of Joshua Sr. names Sr. 's children : Elizabeth Everingham. Joshua Willis (your
petitioner). Frances Baker. Deborah Lucas. Charles Willis. Peter Willis. Thomas Willis.
James Willis. John Willis. Annaretta Fleming and Mary Willis. his only children.
I have a deed of Michael Lucas who bought land from Murray heirs for land just
beyond Linchester. near Preston for 423-1/2 acres.
Another item I have -- 31557. 1781 suit Wm. Higgins & others. Samuel Lucas &
other 1835 about estate of Michael Lucas at time of his death a suit was already in
progress between Lucas & the heirs of Wm. Pattison. left to his niece Margaret Grayless.
all the land in Caroline his father bought of Wm. Robertson."I also give to my said niece
Margaret Grayless 35 acres of land in Dor. Co. (description given) remainder in upper
district to brother Samuel Lucas." Will send whole script if you wish it. Dora says
Joshua Lucas married Deborah Willis.
It seems as if Joshua Willis Sr. dau Deborah married Michael Lucas. He died and
Left Samuel & Michael . Samuel's niece was Margaret Grayless. So her father must
have been Michael Jr. Is this correct?
I can not find anything before the revolution in Md. on Grayless. Are you sure he
did not come in from Delaware. Nothing in early settlers lists.
What we have on Todds through their family research. this is a family that is very
proud of the Todd Family. In a nut shell: Robert Todd immigrant 1650 in Virginia.
came up into A. A. Co. across the bay to Dorchester Co. before the 1699. No land
records in Dor. of early Todd deeds. But we do know that Michael Todd owned many
Farms. Todd's Point in Dorchester is on the deep wide Water. One of finest in county.
Married an Insley. His son Michael Jr. married the Johnson and left Dor. and moved up
into now Caroline on road between Concord & Delaware. land still in Todd family.
The woman who owns it is a good friend of ours and has taken us to see the old home. not the
oldest one but still very old.
The Lucas's owned the land where Denton now stands. Denton is our county seat.
Lucas brothers laid out the town and sold lots. Have his documented in Eleanor
Horsey's book.
I have been looking in Md. Calendar of Wills and can find little on Harmon. no
Grayless. much on Johnson's. I find in 1600 a Philadelphia Rawlings. Also a Phila. in
the Williams family. Shall I pursue this line? I am enclosing some notes but you may
already have them. Id o not go to the courthouse anymore but Dora does. She does this
professionally. but she has not gone for some time since she is recovering from a cat bite
on her and. We are now trying to decide what to do with the cat. He has several bad
marks against him. but we are so fond of him and he was hanging by his leg when he bit
here. otherwise it would not have happened. He is too good for cat food. will eat only
the finest meat. liver. fish. etc. We are keeping him in now to see if rabies develops but
he is no more rabid than I am.
I am pleased to tell you that the Cheegum (Brick) house has had a lot of work
done on it. Were thinking of selling it to son who planned to tear down oldest parts but
that plan fell through.
Hope to see you this summer. If coming let me know. Clara Mitchell

Kate McCarter

Thank you for your time and assistance.

information about them. In particular I am looking for names of parents
and grandparents. great grandparents. birthdays. marriages and the year of

they will all be returned to you.
I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. If you would like. I would

I can't quite reconcile Philadelphia's birth in 1766 with her son Daniel's birth in 1778. . not impossible but pushing it. I just wonder if his mother was someone else instead. or if she just had children very young. Hello Donald--
Thank you for your prompt reply to my query. I'm quite excited to have
this apparent match to you line. although I had never heard the name
Gradeless before. I was quite familiar with the Carmien family of northern
IN and as a boy used to attend the Carmien-Scamehorn reunion there. which
is probably the forrunner of the reunion you attended. My son Andrew was
in fact named after Andrew Jackson Carmien. my Carmien ancestor. Because
of the way the name was (and is) spelled by this line. I had assumed it was
of German descent. Here is what I have. working backward
My great-grandmother was Minnie Louella Carmien b. 12 Dec 1863 Bristol IN
d. 17 Nov 1943 Williamsburg. Grand Traverse Co MI
m. 24 Mar 1881 Nattawa. St. Joseph Co IN to
John Scamehorn
Her parents: Andrew Jackson Carmien b. 28 Nov 1833 Bristol IN
d. 24 Aug 1902 Bristol IN
m. Elizabeth Ann Newell (b. 11 Feb 1839; d. 9 Mar 1925 Bristol IN)
Children: Royal A. (Burt) Carmien
Carrie E. Carmien
James Melvin Carmien b. 9 May 1861 d. Oct 1946 m. 21 Nov
1880 Nancy Elinia Riley
Minnie Louella Carmien (as above)
The parents of Andrew Jackson Carmien were
William Carmean/Carmien b. 13 Oct 1803
d. 10 Jan 1882 MD
m. Rebecca Dillon (b. 13 Oct 1803; d. 10 Dec 1882 MD)
Children: Jessy F. Carmean b. 28 Sep 1829; d. abt 1897 OH/IN; m. 18 Mar
1858 Elkhart IN Mary S. Sendon(er)
Elizabeth Carmean b. 28 Sep 1831; d. young
Andrew Jackson Carmean (as above)
William H. Carmean b. 8 Jan 1836
Charles Curtis Carmean b. 20 Jul 1838
Mary Jane Carmean b. 30 May 1840; d. young
John Allen Carmean b. 9 Sep 1842
(the preceding information is substantiated by the 1850 census for
Jefferson Twp. Elkhart Co IN. but for the children the first is spelled
Jesse. Andrew Jackson is A. J. Charles Curtis is just Curtis. Mary Jane is
Jane. and John Allen is Allen; later on. Andrew Jackson is known as Jack.
In the preceding generation I had unknown parents with two children
William Carmean (as above)
Pierce Carmean (who I now believe is Pearson)
Much of the above is taken from the Scamehorn family history and should be
considered preliminary. but I'll try to check it out. I'll be interested
to see if you agree and. if so. would like to see how it fits with earlier
lines of the Carmean family. I understand that that is not the original
spelling either. according to some.
Thanks again for your help. I will pass this on to others in the
Scamehorn-Carmien family who do take an active interest in genealogy.
These are now in the Traverse City MI area.

Hi Donald - I'm researching information about Elizabeth Cremean (#4632). I
was wondering if you have any information on her?
I'm a descendant of Elizabeth Cremean who - according to my family tree -
was one of Edward "Smith" Cremean and Mary Dillon's children; however. she
is never listed in any report/family tree on the web. Mary's obituary
states that she did in fact have 12 children. . but most people report that
she only had 11. I am curious to know if your Elizabeth is the one I've
been searching for. Perhaps my Elizabeth is indeed the 12th child?
I do know that Elizabeth married Robert Staples. They had a child named
Harriet Staples. I would be happy to send you the obituary if you'd like to
see it.
Thanks so much. Marla Schalow
