Hopkins
From a very old letter (Appears to have been written by Hannah Hopkins:
Moses Hopkins-born March-24-1780 -died Sept-7-1830
Marcey Kirkendall-bornOct---1784-Died April-22-1828.
Great grandparents of Hannah Leah Hopkins.
Their Children where--
Rebecca-born Aug-15-1801-died June-2-1827
Edward-born Nov-22-1802-died Feb-20-1807
Jeremiah (my grandfather) born-June-15-1805-died-May-3-1875
Christina-born-June-26-1807-Died Feb-11-1843
Marlin-born-June-22-1809-died Feb-17-1837
Phebe-forn Nov-21-1810-died Jan-7-1892
Charity-born Feb-19-1813
Elizabeth-born Feb-23-1815
Nancy-born Aug-5-1817
Moses-born Aug-7-1819
Aaron-born Sept-17-1821-died April-25-1825
Mary-born Oct-17-1823
The above names would indicate that Rebecca was named for Moses' mother: Edward for his father: and Marlin confirms the maiden name of Rebecca Marlin Hopkins. I understand that my grandfather, Jeremiah Hopkins, was eighteen months old when Moses and Rebecca, his mother, came to Ohio. Hence my conclusion that it was 1807 or 1808 My first cousin, Luther Peterson, lives at Frankfort, Ohio. He has a winter home at Box-18-Route2-Miami, Florida. I have written and asked him for any information he has on the burial places of Moses and Rebecca, and asked him to see what he can find there. He will return to Ohio in the spring.

Letter from George Robinson, Jr. 206 W. Market St., Washington C. H., Ohio, October 3, 1953: Dear Mrs. Raber: Thank you so much for your interesting notes. They all sound like familiar names. I am especially glad to hear when Reuben Rowe was ordained. I think he was license in Ross County about the same time for I have the Court minute book entry about it some where. Are you interest in the line of Robert Hopkins? I have found a deed in 1887 which says that Robert Hopkins died testate and his will was probated 8-15-1865. In the will to left 101 acres to his son William on condition that William pay $1300 to his (William's) sister Lucinda Strader. Robert and his wife were dead and so was William but Lucinda had never given a release. So all their Wm. Hopkins heirs signed so that William's estate could be settled. The signers were Frank Hopkins & wf Annie E., Elon Harper and wf. Mary, Liew Fisher and h. John Fletcher Hopkins (single), Dayton Hopkins (single, Venie Bowdle (widow), Martha Boatman (widow), Edward Hopkins & wf Florence, Lucinda Stader & h. Cyrus, Robert C. Hopkins & wf Rebecca, Sylvester Hopkins & Wf Edith and Mahala Hopkins, widow (of Wm.). All of Ross Co. except Elon Harper & wf who were of Fayette Co. The land was in survey 4410. I know Cyrus & Lucinda Stader are buried at Waugh's. Cyrus belongs to the Christopher Stader tribe of Austin, Ross Co. deed earlier of Hardy Co. W. Va. It is highly probably that I may get Waugh's Cemetery copied soon. We have had frost now and it may be safe for me to near ivy I will also be happy to send you a list of the Ross County testators in the first four will books A, B, C, D (1798-1845) when I get my typewriter back from the repair shop. I can also send a list of the Pickaway Co. testators 1810-1883 in Book 1 & part of 2. I can send you abstracts of any will in the list. I may also get typed the 1901 Tax List of Ross Co. Thank you again for al the nice data and I will have to admit I'll be very pleased to receive the list of the Muskingum testators. Sincerely, George Robinson Jr. Dear Margaret, Thought this might be of interest to you. M.M.R. |

Dear Sir
Your ad in "Gateway" is interesting and most surprising. I did not know Rebecca's Maiden name and had assumed she was from one of the old Dutch families of NY or NJ to Penn. As far as I know I am not interested in the Hopkins family, but the Kirkendall family, their children married. Where it may or may not be the correct line I want, I don't know--I'm having to prove my line by elimination.

He received his early education in the old subscription schools of Ross Co. Ohio and also attended school a short time in Delaware Co Ohio to which county his parents removed in spring of 1825 where out subject lived about 10 yrs. He md in Ross Co., Ohio 1/19/1835 to Nancy Kirkendall -b 10/25/1810 in Ross Co., Ohio d/o Jeremiah & Phoebe (Hopkins) Kirkendall who came from Penn. In 1839 our subject came to his present place & purchased 320 ac to which he has made several subsequent additions. He has now a farm of 195 ac having distributed large portions of his land to his boys. Mrs. and Mr. Claypool are parents of 7 chn all of whom have farms in immediate vicinity. They are" Jeremiah, Isaac, Joseph, Elijah, Elisha, John & Nancy. They are members of Blue Grass Christian Church.
In "History of Morrow Co Ohio" you will find Sperry's brother Jacob. Most of the Claypools above are buried in Greenmoss & Blue Grass Cem.
I've been told that in the book "The Claypoole Family in America" by Mrs. Evelyne Claypool Bracken that the family of Wm. Claypool & Sarah Sperry was taken from Bible records. Also of interest of their chn:
- Nancy 5/15/1807 -d 7/31/1891 md Jeremiah Hopkins s/o Moses Hopkins & Marcy Kirkendall from Pa settled Fayette Co., Ohio.
- Sperry 7/3/1812 -d 6/25/1893 md Nancy Kirkendall d/o Jeremiah Kirkendall & Phebe Hopkins of Ross Co., Ohio. Sperry to Clark Co., Ill. (*in Ross Co Ohio Marriages 1/29/1835.
- Isaac 3/14/1815 -d 12/5/1872 md Marcy Kirkendall d/o Jeremiah Kirkendall & Phoebe Hopkins (Ross Co. Ohio Marriage (12/21/1836)
From Tax lists, Deeds, Census etc. I know Jeremiah Kirkendall & Phebe Hopkins were in Concord township Ross Co., Ohio, Jeremiah died before 1840 census and Phebe was still there with 2 sons in 1850, the son Harvey was in Civil War and died in Tazewell Co., Ill. (Other Kuykendall in Ross Co., from W.Va. from Ben's bro John)
There is a Will in Allegheny Co., PA which also fills the bill--Mifflin twsp 1818 James Kuykendall mentions first wife Christine & their chn: Henry, Charity, Allen, Eleanor, Mary, Christopher, Samuel, Roses, Missey, Mathew, Christina, & James. His 2nd wife Catherine Everly c/o Leonard & their Chn: ?Andrew, Leonard & Joseph.
His first wife Christine was d/o Henry Huffman of Knowlron twsp Sussex Co., NJ which today would be near Columbia, Warren Co., NJ from Mortgage Book P pg. 63-4 stating James & Christine lived Mifflin Twsp Allegheny Co., PA. 3/28/1797 & signed in presence of Jeremiah Allen & Thomas Hazen it was not recorded until 5/91806. [They sell her inheritance]
PROBLEM: "Kuykendall Family" by Geo. B. Kuykendall pub 1919 on pg. 279 a Mrs. Klingensmith says her father was Andrew & his father as Jeremiah. Jeremiah's wife was Catherine Everly. Andrew had 12 half bros. & sis.. & 2 full brothers. The full bros.: Joseph & Leonard & 1/2 bros. she could only remember Christopher, Samuel & Jeremiah. They lived in Allegheny Co., Washington Co. & Armstrong Co., Penn. --she has more or less substituted Jeremiah for James in her story vs. the will.
Other Kuykendall, Kirkendall, Kikendall wills in this area of Penn--Benj. 1789 was s/o Jacob & he lived NYU, Hampshire Co., W. Va & Penn Allegheny Co., Lewis 1789 had been bapt. Leur 1706 & is 1st cousin of Benj. James, if we could prove his age. possibly be Lewis son. If not then another family is also there. In later years these people drop down into Northern Neck of W. Va. and into Ohio.--early 1800
This may help you with Edward Hopkins & who his children were. But of no help on Rebecca,. If she is related to Wm. Penn some data might be found regarding her in the Penn Quaker records; or in Penn Archives I can't remember series or volumes that have Quaker records in them. In Pub of Gen. Soc. of Pa in some volumes have early Quaker Records.
Sincerely Arlene Saffell
