Holding a leather bound family Bible (old and new testament) that belonged to William Llewellyn Wheeler b 1827 d 1908. In it are hand written records for the marriage of William and Mary Davis on July 2, 1853. Also, recorded: births of them and their children and births and deaths of their grandchildren. A glued in record shows the marriage of Mary Zorada A. Wheeler (and death) and Alfred N. Thursten, and the birth of their children. In the Bible was an obit for William from a local paper. The other "prize" was a pressed carnation. Unfortunately the title page is missing so there is no indication when it was printed. Other Wheeler Families

Family of Jason Wheeler of Clermont Co Ohio.

One group of Wheelers in Clermont Co. OH was the family of Jason and Patience Wheeler. This Jason was born 4 oct. 1765 in New York and married Patience ca. 1787. They were living in Herkimer Co. NY in 1800 and Jason purchased property there in 1801 and 1803. He apparently is the Jason Wheeler living in Chenango Co. NY in 1810 but by 1820 had located in Franklin twp Clermont Co. OH.
Jason Wheeler had twelve children. In the 1820 census of Clermont Co., he appears on p. 13A and three of his sons appear in Franklin twp. as well: George, Silas M and Jason Jr. By the 1830 census his family is located in Washington twp. (near Neville). Son Harvey is there and the Prudence Wheeler on p. 249 is the widow of Jason Jr. It is unclear who the other Wheelers in that township may be but it is possible some may be grandchildren of Jason. At least two of Jason's daughters are also listed there: Almira as the (unnamed) wife of James Johnston on p. 250 and Mary Ann as the (unnamed) wife of John Hastings on p. 245 (Franklin twp.).
By 1840 most of this family seems to have migrated to Marion Co. IN; there we find the sons Harvey and Tracey the daughters Mary Ann Hastings and Almira Johnston. Jason and Patience are not found by name in the 1830 and 1840 censuses but Patience was living in 1850 as a very aged woman with her daughter Mary Ann Hastings in Marion Co. IN. It seems unlikely that any members of this family--at least any bearing the name Wheeler--remained in Clermont Co. after about 1840.

John Wheeler 1750-1843

Contributed by J. Michael Poston, Rockville, Maryland — poston8@verizon.net. Much of the information I have on Wheeler has come from my cousins, John Chandler Clement and Alice K. Harris to whom I am greatly indebted.

According to his obituary, published in the "Franklin Register and Sandy River Farmer" at Farmington, Maine, John WHEELER was born in England and came to Edgecomb, Maine at age 17. Nothing is known of his parents, except that the obituary indicates that John learned the tailor's trade from his father.
The first time Wheeler appears in the records is at his wedding in York, Maine (intention 20 April 1776, marriage 20 June 1776). His wife was Mary ("Molly") INGRAHAM (1755-1814), daughter of Edward and Lydia (HOLT) Ingraham of York.
Wheeler shipped as quartermaster aboard the Continental Sloop of War, "Ranger," under the command of John Paul Jones during its maiden voyage to France on which it carried dispatches and intelligence to the American Commissioners in Paris (Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee, and Silas Deane). En route, the Ranger captured English shipping and Wheeler was placed aboard the brig "Mary" as a member of the prize crew. After arrival in France, Ranger harrassed English ports, captured English ships, raided Scottish towns, and generally made its presence felt. Wheeler was one of 28 warrant and petty officers who signed a petition to Benjamin Franklin in June 1778 ["Papers of Benjamin Franklin," Yale University Press, 1988, vol. 26, pp 621-623].
In 1793, Wheeler moved his family to Chesterville, Maine [now Franklin County] where he was the first tailor in town. In 1814, Molly and several members of his family died of typhoid fever.
In 1817, he married Betsey TEAGUE, widow of Samuel HISCOCK and mother of John's son-in-law, Jesse Hiscock.
John Wheeler died in the home of Jesse and Jenny (Wheeler) Hiscock in Wilton, Maine 23 April 1843. Betsey, born 24 March 1768, died in Wilton 25 Dec 1848. John and Mary Wheeler are buried in Chesterville [Center] Cemetery and Betsey is buried with her first husband in Weld Road Cemetery, Wilton. John's gravestone gives his birth date as 14 May 1750.
The first eight children of John and Mary (Ingraham) Wheeler were born in York, Maine and the last two were born in Chesterville. All of them are recorded in the "Chesterville, Maine Vital Records, 1802-1892" p. 45. [FHL film no. 0010792].

DISCUSION:

Arguments in support of Joseph Temple Wheeler (JTW) being the same as Joseph Wheeler son of 5 John Wheeler (son of 4 Simon Wheeler) in DRG paper.
There is some family history passed down from JTW's son, Oliver and his granddaughter, Alice Fitch. The parts which are known to be incorrect have been filtered out and the parts which may be correct are discussed below.

1. JTW may have been named for Sarah Temple Wheeler's father Joseph Temple.
2. Oliver states that JTW's father moved to Ohio c. 1790 taking his three oldest children (John, William and Emily) with him. JTW and a twin sister, name unknown, (born 1786) were left behind because they were too young and mother was dead.

Oliver says that JTW's father located near what is now Batavia, Ohio. Batavia is located in Clermont County a few miles east of Cincinnati. DRG's 5 John moved to Clermont County.

Oliver also states that JTW's father was the first of the family to move to Maine. He may not have known of Sarah Temple Wheeler or that she was actually the first one in Maine (per DRG).

Oliver had contact with JTW's brothers, John and William in Ohio. John had three wives and William had two.
Alice says that two of JTW's brothers emigrated from Maine with one going to Ohio. She visited this brother,(she didn't remember his name) in Ohio in 1855. and
says that he was an itinerant preacher. She also says that JTW's father did not go to Ohio around 1786. However, if one of JTW's brothers (who would have been b. c 1780) went to Ohio in 1786, JTW's father must have gone at that time.
DRG says 5 John Wheeler moved from Maine to Ohio and was a Baptist Minister.
John had three children: John, jr., Dollie b.1786 and Joseph. If the connection is correct, DRG's John, jr. would have been JTW' oldest brother and Dollie would have been JTW's twin sister.

Arguments against the connection.

Oliver and Alice say that JTW's father/brothers moved to Ohio by 1790.

DRG has good evidence that 5 John Wheeler moved to Ohio in 1817. It is stange that Oliver and Alice do not know the name of JTW's father particularly if he lived in Maine until 1817, even though neither had been born by 1817.
But then, they didn't know the name of JTW's alleged twin sister.

The material from Oliver was written after 1886 and probably after 1895 so that he was at least 72 years old. Alice's material was written after 1902 so that she was at least 70.

If the connection between JTW and DRG's 6 Joseph is to be correct, then Oliver and Alice must have been poorly informed and had poor memories. Both are quite possible.

Buckingham County, VA. Notes for James WHEELER:

James WHEELER [1753 - 1843]

While the time of James Wheeler and family came to Gibson County is given as late summer of 1805,
James states in his application for Revolutionary War pension the number of years he was living in
Indiana made the year 1808. It is stated that they came from Virginia and North Carolina.
He may have also been in Sumner County, Tennesse prior to his arrival in
Gibson County. Whether he came with just his family group or other relatives is not certain.
There were several Wheeler families in other Indiana Counties. Other records of this family of
Wheelers indicate they were living in Shelby and Deleware Counties. Another early family from
North Carolina settled east of Gibson and Posey Counties in White County, Illinois.

The following article was obtained from an early history of Gibson County, Indiana, from Princeton library.

Tartts History of Gibson County, Indiana:
"Naomi (mother) wife of Benjamin Wheeler* and sister of Charity Gifford Bolt, died March 29, 1892,
aged 86 years. Benjamin (father) died June 2, 1850 aged 57, (?) George (brother) son of
Benjamin and Naomi died December 16, 1896. ______________(sister) died ______________ age 62 years.

James Wheeler, who also had a large family. A wife, five sons and 4 daughters. He was a peculiar
sort of a man, fond of fun, and occasionally enjoyed taking part in a hand to hand fight, and at gatherings
such as log rollings or muster days. Wheeler was sure to imbibe quite freely and then get into a
misunderstanding with someone, which would generally result in a fist fight. Wheeler though a man of
small stature was very spry and active and mostly came out victorious. He settled in the timber east
about five miles from Princeton in the summer of 1805 where he erected a cabin, cleared a small tract
of land, but his subsistence for himself and family for the first year was gained principally by hunting, as
he arrived too late in the summer to make a crop. He became quite a noted hunter, and proved himself
to be quite a valuable acquisition to the settlement. He was foremost in repelling any Indian aggresions
and frequently boasted that he was not afraid of the redskins, and he proved it, because on the breaking
out of Indian troubles he promptly enlisted, as did three of his sons, and participted in the battle of
Tippecanoe. The war over and peace declared, he returned to his country home, where he lived the
quiet life of a farmer for a number of years, and he and his wife died after filling in usefulness their
allotted time. They left numerous descendants who still reside in the county.....
(continues with other early county families).

James Wheeler is buried five (5) miles southeast of Princeton, Indiana in his own private burial plot.
In 1926 the patriotic organizations of Gibson County placed a tombstone in front of the original one;
there is also a footstone. The original tombstone reads: "In memory of James Wheeler who served in
the revolutinary war five years, ten months, died the 2nd, buried with the full honors of war,
4th July 1843, Aged 90 years".
